When asked to create a project about sexuality, HIV/AIDS and our society I initially felt overwhelmed by the task. As time went on I found that my trepidation was not unfounded as this is a disease which defies any clear interpretation of itself. I felt that it was important for me, as someone speaking outside of the community of people living with AIDS, to deal with a subject more pertinent to those who have yet to be exposed to this sexually transmitted disease. This presentation deals with the relative ubiquity of HIV/AIDS/SAFE SEX information and what it means in our everyday lives.
There is much medical science knows about HIV and much that it does not but the simple thing which we have heard time and again has been proven is that having safe sex prevents the spread of this disease. Most of us in this society know with the prevalent message of safe sex how we all can do our part to prevent the spread of AIDS but why is it that we continue to fall prey to our desire rather than our common sense. Truly the urge to be sexual is one of the strongest human instincts but this seems in many cases to override any programming we may receive or any survival instinct we would expect to have. This "it won't happen to me" attitude reigns over us and we go on intentionally or unintentionally infecting or being infected by the ones we are loving...with the urge to be on the titillating edge of indecision...or with the feeling that having safe sex somehow ruins the act. I realize that in a forum such as this I may be preaching to the choir...but if you would just once think about when you have had unprotected sex, why did you do it, do you now think it was wise, what was it within you that told you not to worry, that told you everything would be ok and tomorrow would be a day just like any other... There is fear, there is paranoia, then there is duty to the self. With this disease in many instances there are no victims, only perpetrators of the same crime.
